LATIN AMERICA: NGOs Call for Regional Whale Sanctuary

VALPARAISO, Chile October 17 , 2007: Eight months before Chile hosts the annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission, Latin American conservation organizations have proposed a whale sanctuary in the nation's territorial waters. The proposal will be considered by the Environment Commission and then the Executive Branch. The sanctuary, if approved, would join the already established Southern Ocean and Indian Ocean Whale Sanctuaries. IPS-Inter Press Service

Iceland stops whale-hunting quotas after low demand

REYKJAVIK August 24, 2007: Iceland will not issue further whaling quotas at this time, citing the lack of market demand as driving factor in decision. Iceland is in ongoing negotiations with Japan, the primary market for its whale meat. Reuters
